cubelog

Welcome to my central repository for cubelog, the Nissan Cube that will blog itself.

First off, please go to my Hypercube canvas and vote for me. Don't forget to vote every day! Also, check out my other Hypercube projects, Cube Pro Quo and Drive-In Everywhere.

Now, on to the plot.
Using some amazing Open Source software, I'll log pictures, GPS data, and OBD (real-time performance data from the Nissan Cube's engine computer) from every trip I take. It will be recorded by an on-board PC, and trip data will be automatically uploaded(via Wi-Fi) to the web after the Cube gets home.

How:

-Linux OS on a netbook
-gpsd and obdgpslogger software for data recording, camE for taking pictures from a webcam pointing forwards through the windshield. Scripts and zero conf networking to automate recording & uploading.

Why:

-A car as interesting as the Cube ought to write its own blog. I'm just giving it the means.

As for implementation, here's what I have so far:

Pharos GPS-500, courtesy Eddie Ng. Thanks! It's a GPS receiver, so it will interface with OBD GPS Logger, a clever Linux program that, er, logs OBD and GPS data. I also have a very generic OBD-serial data cable, plus a USB adapter.

Next, my dev box: an old desktop computer salvaged from my parents and Ubuntu Linux-ized, which I will use to test all these systems before I buy the real thing, which will either be a Car PC unit or TLO's Acer Aspire One (shh! She doesn't know!)

Finally, the cameras...whatever. USB cams are a dime a dozen, and I'll need 2 or 3. So that's 2.5 cents for my camera budget.

After that, the rest is all glue code, installation minutia, and work work. So if I win, I install and write the glue code, and then as my gift to the world, I release my code and configuration data for the world to use. Let a thousand cubelogs bloom!
