I've been making a few jokes here and there about how my new job title is "interim regional assistant manager." This is meant to be comical, of course. In fact I'm now an acting supervisor, not an interim manager.
But I'm excited. And I'm not just saying that in case my manager is reading this. It's an important project, one I care about in a fairly visceral way.
Meanwhile, it seems a few of my friends are looking for work, and at the very time when Tim Bray is writing a Tough Times series. (The two things that can be said about that are that 1, World War II and the Great Depression were tough times, this not so much; and 2, if you're personally out of work, the unemployment rate is 100%, at least for the demographic of greatest importance).
But I'm pretty happy, in a painfully self-indulgent way, to be gainfully employed, with some job security, and with a sense that my bosses are happy with the work I've been doing lately.
My bike racing has gone to pot, but a lot of my key doing-work skills have been put through a quiet, steady, painful process of self-improvement. We'll see where this ends up.
Meanwhile, if you are looking for a lead on a user-experience specialist or a guy who knows how to manage serious web-based projects for serious clients, drop me a line. I know who you need.

This post, with its excellent title, deserves a longer second half discussing the nature of work, the nature of pay, and matters arising thereof. But not tonight. I'm busy.
