A tiny footnote to the Internet, EV edition

So, in the midst of a long discussion on a particular electric car publicity run, someone posted this:120kW is huge by residential standards but not unusual for industrial/commercial. Your average 50kW radio station would have electric service that big.

Now if you want to replace gas stations with fast charging stations you would have to put 2-12 or so of these 120kW chargers in your facility. Then you have your customers vehicles occupy the premises for 20 minutes each. After this wait they pay you $4 (at 10 cents per kW-hr). Does this sound like a good business to anyone?

Answer: yes, it does. Gas stations these days tend to do a bit better than break-even on fuel sales, and make their real money on sales from their convenience stores.

Given these economics, if the next generation of EVs is able to take a 20-minute charge and get a reasonably usable range, I foresee a good market for electricity bars that are designed to be a nice place to sit for 20 minutes. Given the likely demographics of early-adopter EV owners, this is a business model that has Starbucks written all over it.

Confounding issues? I think self-driving cars will arrive on the market just as EV becomes an established technology. The window for non-autonomous EVs is less than a decade, I'd guess, given that autonomous prototypes are at about the same stage as major EV offerings were, and don't really need to wait for any technologies (like batteries or charging infrastructure) that aren't quite developed.
