A long long time ago, in a

A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, friend #1 was trying to find something in the index of a large manual, and friend #2 said "oh, that's under 'M' for 'counter-intuitive.'"

Some other ones

L as in Llano (sure it's Spanish, but is more or less incorporated as an English word in northwest Texas -- we're not using Scrabble rules are we?)
Q as in Qi (the modern pinyin spelling for "chi" -- the life energy)
R as in Ryokan
U as in Uitlander
V as in Verklempt (that nice F sound on it)

I'm sure my inner word nerd could come up with a few other nasty ones if I spent more time.... :)

Genius!

Some better than mine! I also forgot R as in Rye, which I think is the best so far, and Xeno is clearly better than Xerxes for X. T as in Tsuris? Q as in Queue is also nice, since it plays to C as in Cue.

O, F, and Z strike me as most in need of improvement.

Crazy ABCs

Hmm, have you checked out the Barenaked Ladies "Crazy ABC's"? Similar idea.

Truth is stranger than fiction

In the actual phonetic alphabet, "Quebec" (for Q) may be deliberately mispronounced as Q-beck, not as the place name. The sensible and beneficial reasons why are left as as exercise for the reader.
